Senior Manager, Behavioral Science and User Engagement Design

Job Summary

This is an applied behavioral science role within the product team at Walgreens Health and collaborates cross-functionally with the clinical, user experience, marketing, engineering, and the broader product teams. The behavioral science and engagement role serves as a subject matter expert and is responsible for ensuring the integration of behavioral economics, health behavior change and health communication evidence-based techniques, best practices and innovative approaches into marketing materials, and product design and content in order to achieve engagement and health behaviors associated with clinical outcomes. This role will lead iterative design and test and learn experiments focused on creating unique customer experiences that improve engagement, health behavior and clinical outcomes. Critical to this role is the oversight and communication of the translation of research insights into impactful design and content.

Job Responsibilities
  • Leads, develops and coaches a team of behavioral scientists to design product, services and content to have an impact on user engagement and health behavior.
  • Builds team’s skills by identifying training needs and active coaching.
  • Guides the development and design of behavior and engagement approaches and models for products and services leveraging a wide range of health behavior change, behavioral economics and health communications techniques and best practices.
  • Provides guidance for incorporating behavioral science and health communications into the content development and review processes to ensure product and service design, and content are completed with excellence, with high quality deliverables that ensure impact on engagement and health outcomes.
  • Oversees design activities, ensuring they are integrated into the product design and development process and impact on engagement and health outcomes.
  • Incorporates behavioral science state of the art and best practices into product and service design, and content ensuring alignment with stakeholder needs, value proposition and core business needs.
  • Identifies and leads experiments that address the best business value and desired health outcomes within assigned clinical and consumer business area.
  • Shares and embeds understanding of the stakeholder engagement and health behavior, determinants of behavior and effective behavioral economic and behavior change techniques.
  • Partners with clinical, marketing, and product to integrate health communication and behavioral science techniques into content and design.
  • Identifies, develops and manages behavioral design vendors. Develops and strengthens existing vendor partnerships, and continually explores new partnerships and methods to stay on cutting edge of behavioral design. Identifies and partners with best-in-class suppliers to ensure flawless execution and delivery of results.
  • Works with Senior Director Behavioral Science and Engagement to prioritize and manage vendor budget.
  • Provides IP inputs, publication manuscripts and presentations for internal and external opportunities as they arise.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years OR High School/GED and at least 7 years experience in public health, social/behavioral sciences, psychology, behavioral economics, social sciences, human centered design
  • At least 8 years of academic and/or applied and/or professional behavioral science and/or design research
  • Extensive experience translating evidence and research insights into engaging products, services and content that achieve health outcomes
  • Experience with content development and review process to address cognitive biases and/or determinants of health behavior to achieve health behavior and clinical outcomes
  • Experience with design of digital engagement (e.g. nudges) and/or behavior change interventions to optimize engagement with physical and digital products and services, improve health behavior and clinical outcomes. Experience managing or leading iterative design, prototype development and concept testing process including A/B testing
  • Subject matter expertise in health behavior change theories, mechanisms, and techniques and/or digital health behavior change intervention design, and/or behavioral economics intervention design and/or health communication content development
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or crossfunctional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least 20% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate (e.g. DrPH, ScD) or MA/MS/MHS/MPH in public health, psychology, behavioral economics, social sciences, human centered design or other related field
  • Experience working in research, public health, commercial, biotech/pharma, big tech or medtech, start-up, healthcare settings, health insurance settings or similar setting
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate with all levels of the business, both by formal and informal communication.
  • At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing and budgeting for iterative concepts design, prototyping and testing
  • Experience translating research and concepts into requirements
  • Experience writing manuscripts, publishing and presenting
